The Endocannabinoid System and Homeostasis

What is Homeostasis

Homeostasis is the state of steady internal physical and chemical conditions maintained by living systems. This dynamic state of equilibrium is the condition of optimal functioning for the organism and includes many variables, such as body temperature and fluid balance, being kept within homeostatic range. Which means Homeostasis is important because in order to survive, grow, and function, we must be able to maintain a stable internal environment. This is where the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) comes in.

What is the Endocannabinoid System

The Endocannabinoid System (ECS) is a network of endocannabinoids and receptors within our bodies that help us maintain Homeostasis by monitoring what is going on in our bodies, which makes it absolutely crucial to our survival. Research and studies have revealed that the ECS is involved with a number of physiological processes including the regulation of neurotransmitter release, pain and analgesia, energy balance, and control of immune cell function. Meaning the ECS is responsible for regulating the biochemistry related to an array of processes such as pain management, immune response, appetite, energy regulation, mood, and memory.

The Endocannabinoid System’s Role in Maintaining Homeostasis

Our Endocannabinoid System works to maintain homeostasis by utilizing cannabinoids and cannabinoid receptors found throughout our entire body, from our immune system to our central and peripheral nervous systems. Which means that when our bodies detect an imbalance it naturally produces endocannabinoids to interact with the cannabinoid receptors to trigger a chemical response that works to return process that is out of balance back to homeostasis. Scientists believe that in some cases not enough cannabinoids are created for the Endocannabinoid System to work effectively. This condition is referred to as clinical endocannabinoid deficiency and has been linked to several health problems and diseases. In these cases, researchers have found evidence that supplementing with phytocannabinoids, such as CBD, may help the Endocannabinoid System to function properly and maintain homeostasis to keep the body running optimally leading to improved health.
